From Purchasing Administrator to Aspiring AATQB

Peter Trengove

My journey into the world of bookkeeping began in August 2018. At that time, I stepped into the role of a purchasing administrator, where I was first introduced to the fundamentals of bookkeeping. My responsibilities included basic bookkeeping using Sage 50 and assisting with aged debtors—a crucial task that sparked my interest in financial management and accounting.

Fast forward to October 2021, when a significant life change prompted me to relocate to Anglesey. Leaving my purchasing administrator position was bittersweet, but it also opened new doors for me. With a fresh start on the horizon, I decided to further my education in accounting by enrolling in the AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) program.

Embracing Education at Coleg Llandrillo

My journey with AAT began at Coleg Llandrillo, where I immersed myself in Level 2 studies. The course provided a solid foundation in bookkeeping principles, enhancing my understanding of financial records and the importance of accuracy. After completing Level 2, I continued my education with AAT Level 3, which deepened my knowledge and skills in accounting.

Balancing full-time work with part-time studies was challenging but incredibly rewarding. I secured a position as a bookkeeper at Sea Kayaking UK, where I could apply my academic knowledge in a practical setting. Working in a dynamic environment allowed me to sharpen my bookkeeping skills and gain real-world experience.

Achieving AAT Membership

With dedication and hard work, I achieved my AAT membership. This milestone validated my skills and commitment to the accounting profession. It was an affirmation of the countless hours I spent studying and the experiences I gained through various roles.

Now armed with my AAT membership, I decided it was time to take the next step in my career. I launched my website, anyotherbiz.co.uk, as a platform to showcase my services and connect with potential clients. I also took the opportunity to enhance my skills in QuickBooks, a widely-used accounting software, to better serve my future clientele.

The Road Ahead: Becoming Self-Employed

My ultimate goal is to build a thriving client base and become self-employed. The flexibility and autonomy that come with being self-employed are appealing, and I am excited about the prospect of helping businesses manage their finances effectively.

As I embark on this new chapter, I am focused on growing my clientele, continuing my professional development, and refining my services. I believe that my diverse experiences—ranging from administrative roles to full-fledged bookkeeping—have equipped me with a unique perspective on the financial needs of businesses.

Conclusion

Looking back at my journey, I am grateful for the experiences that shaped my path. From a purchasing administrator to a dedicated AAT member, every step has been integral to my growth in the field of bookkeeping. As I move forward, I am eager to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, confident that my passion for accounting will guide me toward success as an AATQB.
